College Gurl Mom
What I Wish I Knew Before Move-In Day
A mom’s perspective on preparing your daughter—and yourself—for college.

College move-in is more than boxes, bedding and a room key. It marks a change in how a family supports one another. For mothers and daughters preparing for this milestone, a little planning can make room for both excitement and uncertainty.
Start with a conversation, not a shopping cart
Before buying dorm essentials, talk about what your daughter hopes college will feel like. What is she excited about? What worries her? Ask how she would like you to support her when something goes wrong. Listening now can make it easier for her to reach out later.
Check the actual room requirements
Use the college’s housing information to confirm bed size, permitted appliances and move-in procedures. Coordinate shared items with her roommate. Pack the first-night essentials together: toiletries, bedding, a change of clothes, chargers and anything she needs before the rest of the boxes are unpacked.
Practice everyday independence
Talk through a realistic spending plan, laundry, transportation and keeping track of deadlines. Help her locate campus resources for academic support, counseling and student concerns. Encourage her to save important contacts and learn how to ask for help herself.
Agree on a way to stay connected
A check-in rhythm can offer reassurance without making every day feel monitored. Decide together what works, and leave room to adjust. A quiet week does not always mean something is wrong; sometimes it means she is finding her footing.
Make space for your own next chapter
You can feel proud and miss her at the same time. Plan something supportive for yourself after move-in—a meal with a friend, a walk or a restful evening. Your role is evolving, and you deserve care during that transition too.
Before the big day: confirm the college’s instructions, share a practical packing list, save key contacts and make a plan for saying goodbye. The goal is a supported beginning, not a perfect move-in.
Fellow college gurl moms, let’s talk.
